Dr. Ester Ntuli is an instructor at North Shore
Community College and her
expertise include early childhood education, instructional technology, and
training in curriculum and instruction. Dr.
Lydia Kyei-Blankson is an assistant professor at Illinois State
University. She is currently researching the effects of
technology integration into teaching and learning. This study included 54 kindergarten-3rd
grade teachers and focused on their understanding and integration of technology
in the classroom. Research and
literature pertaining to this article showed that developmentally appropriate
technology use had positive impacts knowledge and understanding as well as social,
emotional, language, and motor development. The article contains easy to read tables
supporting the data. The results of this
study showed that the majority of these teachers were able to identify age
appropriate technology, but did not know how to effectively integrate it in
their classrooms. Suggestions to remedy
this problem include teacher performed assessments of what children are gaining
from technology use and participation in professional development training. It is also suggested that school districts
provide further funding towards technology resources. The results appear to be non-bias and there
are ample references to support the claims made. The results of the study were successful in
showing that early childhood teachers need additional resources or training to
effectively meet these positive goals of technology integration in early
childhood classes.
